The Medieval Bestiary - The Tiger and the Mirror
Tinctorium tiger
Tinctorium tigercolour

Early Coloured Variant

The tiger and mirror references a piece of animal lore dating back to Ancient Rome when tiger cubs were stolen from the wild to be subject to the violent spectacle of amphitheatres across the empire. When the Mother gave chase, it was believed a mirror would distract her as she mistook her reflection for her cub.
